Home Fire Safety Inspection

It is important that all family members know what to do in the event of a fire.  Here are some tips to help you develop a home fire safety plan:

  1. Home Escape Plan
Draw a floor plan with at least two ways of escaping from every room. Click here to download a Home Escape Plan form. You should make a drawing for each floor of your home. Make sure the plan shows important details such as stairs, hallways and windows that can be used as fire escape routes.

  2. Test all your windows and doors for quick escape.  Do they open easy enough? Are they painted shut? Are they wide enough and/or tall enough to escape?

  3. Choose a safe meeting place outside the house to confirm all family members or guests are out of the house.

  4. Practice alerting family members or guests in the house. It is a good idea to keep a bell and flashlight in each bedroom for this purpose.

  5. Review your home fire safety plan with all family members on a regular basis.

Moline Firefighters are available to conduct home safety evaluations and to assist families with a fire escape plan, at no charge.  To schedule a free home safety evaluation, call 524-2250 Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
