How to Become a City of Moline Firefighter/Paramedic

The City of Moline conducts examinations every other spring to establish a firefighter/paramedic eligibility register. Firefighter/Paramedic applications are available on this website or at the Human Resources Office during a specified time period prior to testing. (Note: A special application is required and the general Application for Employment will not be accepted.)

Please call or email the Human Resources Office at 309-524-2069 or lmiller@moline.il.us to be added to the reminder list for the next firefighter/paramedic recruitment.  The next recruitment is tentatively set for spring 2012, unless the current eligibility register is exhausted before that time.

Applicants must:

  • Be citizens of the United States

  • Be at least 20 years of age, but shall not be appointed until reaching 21 years of age

  • Be under 40 years of age

  • Have 20/20 correctable vision

  • Have obtained their Illinois EMT-P certification or be a pre-hospital RN by the time of appointment (You do not need to have these certifications to test.)

Candidates will be required to successfully complete events as required by the Rules of the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners such as a physical agility test, written examination and oral interview in order to be placed on the eligibility register for the position of firefighter/paramedic.

1. Physical Agility Test:

2. Written Examination:

  • A minimum score of 70% is required on the written examination to proceed to the oral interview. Only the top twenty-five (25) applicants who have passed the written examination will be permitted to participate in the first round of oral interviews.

  • Five (5) points will be added to the passing written score for at least one (1) year of military service with honorable discharge.

  • Study guides for the written examination are available during the specified application period.

3. Oral Interview:

  • Persons receiving the top twenty-five (25) passing scores on the written examination shall be scheduled for the first round oral interviews with the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners, the Fire Chief or designee, 2 other members of the Fire Department and a representative from the Human Resources Office.

  • Interviews will be scored with 70% minimum required to pass.

  • Preferential consideration will be given to firefighter/paramedic candidates during the oral interview process for the following certifications: Firefighter I or Firefighter II, ACLS, BCLS, PALS, NALS or other relevant certification.

  • Educational credit will be given to firefighter/paramedic candidates with the following education: EMT-B, EMT-I, EMT-P, AA/AS degree, BA/BS degree, and MA/MS degree.

  • If an eligibility register of twenty-five (25) is not achieved after the first round of interviews, subsequent rounds of interviews may be conducted based on the written examination scores of the remaining eligible applicants until an eligibility register of twenty-five (25) is achieved.

4. Eligibility Register:

  • The passing scores from the written examination and the oral interview are averaged together and posted on a two (2) year eligibility register.

  • At the time a vacancy occurs, the background investigation and reference check is conducted. The Fire Chief recommends a candidate from the top three persons on the eligibility register. The selected candidate is made a conditional offer of employment and must pass a medical evaluation with a drug screen and a bonafide, valid and job-related psychological evaluation.

Additional information is available by calling the Human Resources Office at 309-524-2068 or 309-524-2067. The City of Moline is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
