Garbage Cart Delivery Update for Moline Residents

Posted 06/26/06

The City of Moline has now completed delivery of the new automated garbage carts to Moline residents. City crews distributed over 15,600 carts to residences over a 22 working day period. With delivery complete, the City would like to remind residents of the following information:

Cart Usage
All Moline residents should now be using their new cart. Residents should discontinue use of their old containers immediately, and transfer any garbage to their new cart. Garbage will no longer be collected from other containers or Herbie Curbies. Please allow at least 3 feet of clearance around the cart to allow for proper collection. Typical household garbage may be placed in the cart as long as it fits under the lid.

Disposal of Old Containers
Over the next two weeks, residents may set out their old
empty containers beside their new cart for free pick-up and disposal by the City. Only empty containers will be disposed of. The City will use a manual truck to collect the empty containers. Residents may also wish to keep their old containers and reuse them for storage of sporting equipment, dog food or birdseed.

Herbie Curbies
Residents who lease carts (Herbie Curbies) from Whittinghill Refuse Equipment must make arrangement with Whittinghill (1-800-747-8441) for termination of the lease and pick-up of those carts. The City of Moline recognizes that residents may be experiencing difficulty in making contact with Whittinghill Refuse. In an effort to assist residents, the City of Moline will be storing those Herbie Curbie containers that are set out for disposal. The containers will be stored in the city’s warehouse, and will be made available should Whittinghill Refuse decide to reclaim their containers. Only those Herbie Curbie containers that are in good condition will be stored at the city’s warehouse. Containers will be stored by the City for a limited time.

Parked Cars
So that the collection truck can easily approach the carts, residents should avoid parking at the curb on collection day.

Requests for Additional Carts or Smaller Cart
Residents may request a second cart for a one-time lease charge of $46.00 and an annual fee of $35.00 to dispose of the extra garbage in the second cart. To request a second cart, contact the City’s Finance Department at 309-797-0481. Some residents may find that the 96-gallon cart is too large for their family. Residents may request a 48-gallon cart in lieu of the 96-gallon at no additional charge. Contact the Public Works Department at 309-797-0780 to request a cart swap out.

Bulky Waste
Items that will not fit into the cart (excluding appliances and tires) will be picked up by making arrangements with the City’s Finance Office at 309-797-0481. Each household is allowed one free special pick-up annually for bulky items. Any additional pick-ups during the calendar year will require a $25 charge to be paid in advance at the Finance Office1616 – 6th Avenue. The City will conduct Bulky Waste pick-ups on Tuesdays and Thursdays once arrangements have been made.

Appliance (White Goods) & Tire Collection
The City of Moline in conjunction with Rock Island County provides a free collection service for household appliances (white goods) and tires. Collection is scheduled on an appointment basis by calling (800) 917-1969.

For questions about the new carts or automated garbage collection program, residents may call the Public Works Department at 309-797-0780. Complete information on garbage, household hazardous materials, recycling and bulky or yard waste can be found on the City’s website
