Moline Residents Making a Difference With Holiday
Recycling Effort - Recycling Up 45% in Moline!

Posted 12/28/06

‘Tis the season for excess waste perhaps, but Moline residents are having a greener holiday through the drop-off recycling effort. The City of Moline is pleased to report that total recycling is up 45% over the three day period December 24 – 27, when compared to the same time period in 2005.

Recycling of fiber (which includes card board, mixed paper and gift wrap) is up 76% over last year, according to a report provided by City Carton Recycling, Moline’s provider for drop off recycling program. Total tons of paper recycled is 18.69 for the three day period. This equates to 318 trees being saved as a result of Moline’s recycling effort. (see attached report)

With Moline’s implementation of the more efficient automated garbage collection program in June, residents are encouraged to recycle their excess waste during the holidays, and continue recycling throughout the year. Moline offers two convenient locations for recycling. Residents may recycle gift wrap (no foil wrap), cardboard, toy boxes, paper and more at these drop-off centers:

*
Public Works Building
4th Avenue & 35th Street

*
Harold’s Landing
26th Street & North Shore Drive (behind the Ben Franklin store)

Recycling drop-off centers are self-service, and are available 24 hours a day. There is no charge to recycle waste.

Items that can be recycled at the drop-off centers include: plastics #1-7, tin and aluminum cans, mixed glass, newspaper, mixed office paper, magazines, and phone books.

Plastic loose fill, bubble wrap and packaging peanuts may be recycled at Mailboxes & Parcel Depot, 4343 – 16th Street, Moline, and SellPro, 3030 State Street, Bettendorf.

Residents who have large cardboard boxes (such as TV or appliances boxes) or large amounts of cardboard, may dispose of them free of charge at City Carton, 4002 –
Kimmel Drive, Davenport.

“This percentage increase is evidence that Moline residents are embracing the program and recycling what they can,” said Doug House, Municipal Services General Manager. “Residents are taking advantage of the convenient drop off recycling centers that are available, and are doing what is right for the environment.”

The City of Moline would like to remind residents that only waste that fits inside the new garbage carts under the lid will be collected. Whether recycling or disposing, residents are encouraged to break down their boxes, cartons, and containers as this will allow more material to be placed inside the garbage cart.

Moline reports that participation rate in the automated garbage collection program is excellent, with fewer than 3% violations to the City’s automated container ordinance. Since implementation of the automated garbage collection program, the City has experienced no injuries to sanitation workers. Last year, the city experienced $330,000 in liability claims and lost time due to injuries related to sanitation crews exiting garbage trucks to collect refuse. Annually, automated garbage collection saves $150,000 to the City’s general fund operating budget.

For questions about recycling or the garbage collection program, residents may call the Public Works Department at 309-797-0780, or click here.  For additional information on recycling, visit the Rock Island County Waste Management Agency’s website.
