Results of Downtown Library Environmental Study to
be Discussed at Joint Meeting

Recently the City of Moline contracted for an
environmental study of the Downtown Library. The Library
was built in 1903, and, similar to other facilities of
that age, asbestos and lead paint were used in the
construction and finishing processes. The environmental
study shows that no exposed and potentially hazardous
asbestos was found in public areas or library employee
work areas. The City has at all times remained mindful
of the health and safety of its patrons and its
employees and has taken all appropriate steps to
maintain patron and employee wellness. Immediate action
has been taken to post required signs and notices at the
entrance to areas that contain the exposed and
potentially hazardous asbestos, which are all non-public
or vacant.
The Reher Art Gallery has been closed until lead paint
can be removed. A mold assessment was also included in
the study. At this time mold is not an immediate health
issue, but is an odor issue related primarily to a leak
in the roof of the art gallery. The roof is scheduled
for replacement in 2006.
The results of the study will be discussed at a joint
meeting of the City Council and Library Board on
Tuesday, May 9, 2006 at the Committee-of-the Whole
meeting in the Council Chamber at City Hall.
