Avenue of the Cities Construction to Begin

As part of the
City’s efforts to reinvest in neighborhoods,
installation of new water main, sanitary sewer, storm
sewer, catch basins, new concrete pavement, sidewalks
and new street lighting on Avenue of the Cities from
27th Street to 33rd Street will resume on March 30,
weather permitting.
Work will begin on the section from 31st Street A to
34th Street. The section from 27th Street to 31st Street
A (constructed in 2008) will still be closed to thru
traffic with access allowed for local traffic. Thru
traffic will be detoured to 12th Avenue at 27th Street
and 34th Street during construction. Signs will advise
motorists that Avenue of the Cities from 27th to 34th
Street is open for local traffic only and that all
businesses in this area are open. To minimize
congestion, motorists are encouraged to use alternate
routes such as John Deere Road or Illinois 92 (4th
Avenue). All Avenue of the Cities businesses are open,
and access will be maintained by alleys and side streets
between 31st Street A and 34th Street during the
construction period.
The construction is expected to be complete by Labor
Day. The contractor for the project is Walter D. Laud,
Inc.
After improvements, residents will benefit from a
smoother, longer lasting road surface, and improved
street drainage from the new storm sewers. The project
is funded through Motor Fuel Tax, Water and Water
Pollution Control Utility funds.
