“Bag Your Leaves” for Free Begins October 15
The City of Moline is pleased to provide residents with
the annual leaf collection service. Following are
guidelines for this year’s leaf disposal program:
Bag Your Leaves for FREE! (No city sticker required)
FREE leaf bag collection
for Moline residents will be offered October 15 through
December 15. The normal $2.00 sticker fee will be waived
during this time. Leaves must be placed in large paper
yard waste bags and placed at the curb on normal garbage
collection day. Residents should set bags at least three
feet away from the garbage carts so they will not
interfere with the automated collection of garbage. A
separate yard waste truck will pick up the leaf bags.
Yard waste bags are available for purchase at Moline
hardware and grocery stores.
Leaf Vacuuming Program
Moline’s leaf vacuuming
service will run October 15 through December 1, 2009,
weather permitting. During this time, residents may rake
their leaves to the boulevard for vacuuming by city
crews for no additional fee. Leaf vacuuming is intended
to aid in leaf disposal during the peak season (October
15 – December 1) and should not be considered the
primary means of disposal.
As in prior years, two
vacuuming crews will be working in each area Monday –
Friday beginning at the Mississippi River, working their
way south to the Rock River. Crews will begin working at
the location they ended the previous day. Residents are
asked to be patient as scheduled pickups may change due
to inclement weather or volume. Beginning October 15,
residents may call the Leaf Hotline at 797-0425
to hear a pre-recorded
message on the location of the vacuum crews daily, or
view location on the city's website.
Due to the increased volume of leaves that is
anticipated, and to ensure city collection of leaves,
residents are strongly encouraged to bag their leaves
and take advantage of the free leaf bag collection
period, rather than wait for conventional vacuum
collection.
“Green” Method of Leaf Disposal
As an alternate,
residents may consider the environmentally-friendly
option, mulching or composting their leaves as a “green”
method of leaf disposal. Mulching using the proper
mower incorporates grass and leaf waste back into
residents’ yards, while composting using a modern bin
can make usable planting materials for garden or flower
beds. Residents are encouraged to use one or a
combination of both of these green options.
As a reminder, burning of leaves, tree branches and
yard waste is no longer permitted within the City of
Moline.
Moline’s New Leaf Disposal Video
The City will begin
airing a new educational video that explains the leaf
disposal options. Moline residents can view this short
video on Mediacom Channel 18 beginning October 20th. The
video will air daily at: 6 am, 9 am, Noon, 3 pm, 7 pm
and 11 pm.
