Moline’s Top Management Volunteer Furlough Days

Posted 05/22/09

Ten of the City of Moline’s top management officials, including the City Administrator, Police Chief, Law Director, Public Works Director and Finance Director, have voluntarily offered a total of 28 unpaid furlough days to demonstrate their leadership and personal commitment to addressing the City’s financial difficulties. The other top administrative staffers who offered unpaid furlough days are the Economic Development Director, City Engineer, Human Resources Manager, Parks Director and City Planner. The amount of unpaid leave by these administrative team members equates to just under six weeks off and will save the City of Moline $13,142. The group of ten managers will average a 1.1% pay reduction for 2009 as a result of donating almost three days each, back to the City of Moline.

City Administrator Lew Steinbrecher, who initiated the call for volunteers to offer up to three unpaid furlough days, praised the other nine department heads and top administrative officials, who all also lost an additional 1% salary adjustment effective July 1, 2009 by official City Council action earlier this year, for showing their loyalty to the financial health of the municipality and demonstrating their professional dedication to public service in economically tough times. These are the only municipal employees who have stepped forward to improve the City’s financial condition and to help save jobs for the organization. These nine managers will receive 2.1% less compensation than otherwise scheduled for 2009.

The City Administrator and other nine Directors and Managers are the only Moline City employees to experience an actual reduction in paid compensation this year, in an effort to address the declining sales and income tax revenues due to the current national economic recession. The Mayor and City Council expressed their sincere appreciation to the entire group of administrative officials for the strong positive message this voluntary action of self-sacrifice has sent throughout the organization and for the exemplary demonstration of managerial leadership to the Moline community.
