“Only Tap Water Delivers” contest was a joint
project between the City of Moline and Moline School
District No. 40. This is the third year that the City
and the School District have partnered to sponsor the
contest.
Developed to correspond with National Drinking Water
Week (May 3 – 9) and in correlation with the City’s
annual water quality report, the contest was open to
elementary, junior high and high school students. The
theme of the contest was only tap water delivers.
Elementary students submitted original works of art in a
media of their choice, and junior high and high school
students submitted original essays.
School
district staff selected one art finalist from each of
twelve elementary schools third grade, and three essay
finalists from the junior high schools, and high school
for consideration. Final judging was conducted by City
of Moline executive and water division staff. Entries
were judged on grammar, creativity, originality, and
correlation to the contest theme
The
winning art entry will be featured on the cover of the
City’s annual water quality report, which will be
inserted in the Dispatch newspaper on Sunday, June 21.
Other art finalists, along with the three winning essays
will be featured inside the water quality report and on
the back cover. All contest finalists and winning
entries will be publicly displayed at the Moline Public
Library May 7 – 31st.
“We are excited to involve these young people, who will
become the future caretaker's of our nation's water
resources, in Moline's current water supply
communication efforts,” said Greg Swanson, Utilities
General Manager. “The students have created wonderful
art work and thoughtful essays, which reflect knowledge
and appreciation of the important role water plays in
the daily lives of those living in our community."
“Opportunities like the “Only Tap Water Delivers”
Contest allow the school district to work cooperatively
with the City of Moline and also gives our students a
chance to be involved in the community they live in at
an early age,” Superintendent Cal Lee said.
