MOLINE RECEIVES TREE CITY USA GROWTH AWARD
Posted 05/21/10
The City of Moline has again been named a Tree City USA
by the National Arbor Day Foundation to honor its
commitment to community forestry. It is the nineteenth
year that the City has received this national
recognition.
Moline is also the recipient of a Tree City USA Growth
Award for demonstrating progress in its community
forestry program in the following activity areas:
education/public relations, continuing education for
tree workers, partnerships and new projects.
The prestigious Growth Award recognizes environmental
improvement and higher levels of tree care in Tree City
USA communities.
The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day
Foundation in cooperation with the National Association
of State Foresters and the USDA Forest Service.
Moline has met the four standards to become a Tree City
USA Community: A tree board or department, a tree care
ordinance, a comprehensive community forestry program
and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.
“Our Forestry staff maintains over 25,000 trees along
City property, boulevards, and right of ways,” said Doug
House, General Manager, Municipal Services. “Receipt of
this award demonstrates the City’s ongoing commitment to
the update and improvement of Moline’s forestry plan and
operation, and the beautification of our community.”
Moline’s Arbor Day observance was held on Thursday,
April 29 at Washington Elementary School. The event
included a brief history and proclamation by Mayor Don
Welvaert and a tree planting by City Foresters.
