[ARCHIVED] Form For the Future will redefine downtown

MolineFFTF_CommunityOpenHouse_SocialGraphicD

Moline Centre belongs to each of us, and we all have a stake in its future. The investments and design decisions we make today can create a built environment where future generations live, work and choose to spend their free time.

The Form for the Future project will do just that by ensuring that our downtown buildings and public spaces (streets, sidewalks, parking, plazas, gathering places) are designed to be economically resilient and vibrant.

The Form for the Future project will use a different kind of zoning–a form-based code–to ensure that our downtown buildings and public spaces (streets, sidewalks, parking, plazas, gathering places) are focused on public space, connectivity and quality in the built environment.

A form-based code is a way to regulate development that controls building form first and building use second, with the purpose of achieving a particular type of place based on a community vision.

Moline leaders want this to be a community-based decision making process, and are seeking resident and business owner input on these new regulations. Project consultants and staff held several pop-up events around downtown over the summer and conducted a community-wide survey asking residents what they'd like to see downtown look like in the future. Results of that summary can be found here

As City Council prepares to draft the code language soon, with an eye toward spring adoption of the new ordinance, there is still time for residents to weigh in. A Community Open House is scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 26 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Moline Police Department's community room, 1640 6th Ave.
